Praying the Psalms
It's hard to believe but I've been praying the Psalms, mostly using The Liturgy of the Hours, since the fall of 2003. At first, when learning about "praying the hours," I was fairly skeptical. Not long after reading an article on Vineyard Central's website, I connected with Alan, and he helped me understand even more about praying the hours. I have to say . . . it's been life changing for me. My prayer life is far from what it should be but it's probably more consistent now than its ever been. I've been able to read and pray through some beautiful Psalms that were almost foreign to me before. Not to mention, getting to wrestle and think about the Psalms that are hard and sometimes dark. Probably the best part is the rhythm of "keeping the hours." It's good for me to stop several times a day to pray and focus on God.

Back several months ago, Heather and I have began praying the compline (night prayer) together. That's been really good. I look forward to praying that with her each night. As we do that, I can catch a glimpse of what it might be like to live within a community of people who would gather in the evenings and pray together.

There are lots of good resources available, if you're interested in praying the hours.

> Article on The Divine Hours available at Vineyard Central's website.
> Phyllis Tickle's Prayer book series called The Divine Hours.
> The Liturgy of the Hours, the prayer book I use most often.
> The Liturgy of the Hours Apostolate website. It's a great online resource that's almost as good as having the Liturgy of the Hours Prayer book.
> The Daily Office offered online by The Northumbria Community.
